For their study, the researchers looked at the ceramic system (Zr/Hf)O 2 (YNb)O 4. This system shows the same phase transformations as bulk ZrO 2 —a first-order monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transformation at 1,170°C and a tetragonal-to-cubic transformation at 2,370°C. (Only the first transformation is relevant to this study.).

Also, these advanced ceramics are now often used in the fabrication of filters and membranes to purify liquid/water so the study of wetting characteristics of these materials becomes essential. The optical properties of advanced ceramics are equally making them suitable for many state-of-the-art applications.

The composition of 40 pottery sherds from three separate excavation units at the Late Prehistoric (ca. 1300–200 B.P.) hunter-gatherer habitation site of Mine Wash (CA-SDI-813) in eastern San Diego County has been characterised by a combination of thin section petrography and geochemistry and compared to a database of raw materials and additional ceramic artefacts from across the region.2 Ceramic studies using materials science approach – some examples Materials science applied to pottery examination can be likened to an archaeometric study.
