Visual world paradigm

The visual world paradigm (VWP) builds on the observation that when participants are presented with spoken language whilst viewing a visual scene, their eye movements are very closely synchronised to a range of different linguistic events in the speech stream (Cooper, Citation 1974; Huettig et al., Citation 2011b).

Jul 1, 2014 · Abstract. This paper explores how negation (e.g., ) is understood using the visual world paradigm. Our hypothesis is that people will switch to the alternative affirmative (e.g., a green figure) whenever possible, but will be able to maintain the negated argument (e.g., a non-red figure) when needed. To test this, we presented either a specific ...

In this paradigm, participants are simultaneously presented with pictures on a visual display and auditory speech while their proportion of fixations to each picture is recorded. The visual world paradigm is well-established as a means to study sentence processing as it unfolds (Tanenhaus et al., 1995). Next, the predictions of the RRH ...1 Introduction The Visual World Paradigm [VWP, 1] is an eye-tracking method used to study real-time spoken language processing [see 2 for overview]. VWP data require significant preprocessing prior to analysis, and the nonlinear, time-series nature of the data presents challenges for data analysis.Method: A total of 30 monolingual adults were tested using a novel written word version of the visual world paradigm (VWP). We compared activation of phonological anadromes (words that are matched for sounds but not letters, e.g., JAB-BADGE) and orthographic anadromes (words that are matched for letters but not sounds, e.g., LEG-GEL) to determine the relative role of phonology and orthography ...More recently, the visual world paradigm has been used to study the role of control mechanisms (Mercier et al., 2014) and of language context (Mercier et al., 2016) in bilingual spoken word processing. To our knowledge, the visual world paradigm with printed words has not been used previously to a great extent with bilinguals. In terms of methodology, we adapted the visual world paradigm from studies of similar phenomena such as implicatures (e.g., Sedivy 2003 ; Huang & Snedeker 2009 ), using a 2The paradigm pioneered by Cooper and by Tanenhaus and colleagues is now known as the visual world paradigm (Allopenna, Magnuson, &Tanenhaus, 1998)and hashad atransformativeimpact on the field of psycholinguistics. One may ask why Cooper's study failed to get noticed, whereas 20 years later, the Tanenhaus et al. paper had such an enormous impact. To test this, we used the visual world paradigm. In this task, we presented affirmative (e.g., her dad was rich) and negative sentences (e.g., her dad was not poor) while viewing two images of the ...

In this paradigm, eye move-ments to objects in a scene are continuously recorded, so that target word recognition may be monitored as speech unfolds over time. To understand how exactly language and vision interact, we must know which knowledge types are retrieved when processing both language and visual input. A useful method for the investigation of language-vision interaction is the visual world paradigm (VWP; Cooper 1974; Tanenhaus et al. 1995; see Huettig et al. 2011b, for a review). In the …The visual world paradigm (1 hour) ↵ Back to module homepage So far we've learned about how to use eye-tracking to study reading. But there is another popular use of eye-tracking, called the visual world paradigm. In such an experiment, participants listen to a spoken sentence while looking at a visual display of four printed words (including a semantic competitor, a phonological competitor, and two unrelated distractors). We briefly review this literature and discuss the implications for task-based variants of the visual world paradigm. We argue that the results and their likely interpretation may profoundly affect the "linking hypothesis" between language processing and the location and timing of fixations in task-based visual world studies. We outline a goal ...

The Visual World Paradigm (VWP) is a powerful experimental paradigm for language research. Listeners respond to speech in a “visual world” containing potential referents of the speech. Fixations to these referents provides insight into the preliminary states of language processing as decisions unfold. The VWP has become the dominant …The visual-world paradigm is widely used to study spoken word recognition (Tanenhaus et al., 1995). In this paradigm, participants are required to view an array of pictures while lis-tening to spoken target words. The movements of their eyes as they gaze upon pictures are recorded simultaneously. The priming effect is expressed as the proportion of looks to the predicted referent (i.e., the recipient after a DO-prime, the …The findings of a more recent study using the visual world paradigm (VWP), revealed that participants looked faster at the target (e.g. puppy) and longer at its competitor (e.g. bone) compared to other two distractors (e.g. candle and daffodil), suggesting similar graded effects for both associated sounds and words .In a visual world paradigm, English-Spanish bilinguals looked more to the image of a shovel than to unrelated distractors when asked to click on an image of a duck. The word ‘duck’ activates its Spanish translation "pato," which in turn coactivates the Spanish phonologically overlapping word "pala" and its English translation equivalent ... These online processes can be assessed with the Visual World Paradigm (VWP). In the VWP, participants hear an auditory stimulus while viewing an array of potential visual responses. To locate the target response, participants must make one or more eye-movements, which reflect the degree to which each response is under consideration. The present visual world paradigm investigated the role of linguistic focussing cues on adult and child real time (and offline) pronoun processing.
