I put mine in front of the cartridges in a mesh baggie before I switched to a better non cartridge filter (aquaclear), that filter will be fine with the media, you can also make your own cartridges so that you never have to throw out the cartridges which throws out the beneficial bacteria, theres videos on YouTube.
