Seismic measurement

The Richter Scale is an otherwise outdated measurement system due to its inability to measure very large earthquakes. In addition to measuring an earthquake’s magnitude, we can also measure its intensity. The intensity of an earthquake is the strength of the shaking caused by the earthquake. Intensity is measured on the Modified Mercalli Scale.

Seismic measurement. Earthquake epicenters occur mostly along tectonic plate boundaries, and especially on the Pacific Ring of Fire. An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth 's lithosphere that creates seismic waves.

Seismic magnitude scales are used to describe the overall strength or "size" of an earthquake. These are distinguished from seismic intensity scales that categorize the intensity or severity of ground shaking (quaking) caused by an earthquake at a given location.
