I'm more about crushing my opponents beneath rocks and roasting them alive in boxes while never confronting them directly if it can be avoided.

Melee blocking in vanilla and near-vanilla gets you dead. The best way to defeat late-game manhunter packs is just to close the doors and ignore them. They'll just go straight for the mech hives that you're also ignoring, and one problem will take care of another.
