The Upper Bakken shale of the study is a Mississippian siliceous organic-rich shale formation cored from Williston Basin, Montana, U.S.A (Smith and Bustin, 2000). The Niobrara B shale used in this study was cored from the Coniacian Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Niobrara Chalk formation, Denver Basin, Colorado, USA.
