XP is apparently granted proportional to money spent. So, if planes are your only defense, investing $20k or $2k into planes grant you the same XP. But if you have a plane and a village, then the amount spent into each determines what XP it gets. (Apparently). Also, Freeplay gives waaaaay less XP than regular games.
