This article assesses James Baldwin's status as a symbol of Third World, and in particular, African-American and Arab solidarity. A growing literature situates Baldwin's nonfiction writings in the context of his overseas travels to France, Turkey, Israel, and West Africa, while neglecting to examine how Cold War institutions and ideologies shaped the contours of his internationalism.
