Illustrator guides not showing

Guides are not showing when I try to pull them from the ruler. I have tried re-starting Illustrator, and re-setting Preferences, but still not showing. The guides show when I open a new document, but not within the existing file. Any advice welcome.

In my CS6 x64, when using the pen tool for adding points, the smart guides don't show. However, if you add a point, then use the direct selection arrow tool to move the point, THEN you get the smart guides. However, in CS6 x32, the add-point pen does display the smart guides on my Windows 7. Show/Hide Edges (ctrl+H) did the trick for me. Toggling the Real Time Drawing setting on and off did not prevent the guides from vanishing, neither did switching from Previewing on CPU or GPU. This worked for me as well. My guide would disappear when I tried to align it to a path or anchor point.I hope the suggestions shared by Jacob and Met1 helped resolve the problem. And then lock the guides: View > Guides > Lock. There's even a shortcut for that. You could lock the guides instead of the layer. thanks for the reply.
