How to use magic storage terraria

I've seen people say that you can use the wand to make them inactive and mine them, but I also see people saying the containers have to be empty first so I got mixed impressions. Also, we're finding that there are far too many crafting station slots. I see there are TWO versions of the magic storage mod, Magic Storage, and Magic Storage extra.
