The departmental honors program is open to history majors with a cumulative and major GPA that meets or exceeds 3.5 after 12 hours of history including HIS 2500 or its equivalent. Transfer students who have not completed 12 hours at EIU may obtain probationary admittance with the recommendation of the Departmental Honors Coordinator.

Departmental honors. The Departmental Honors Program provides qualified students the opportunity to complete a two-semester, six-credit research project under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Each Honors project culminates in a thesis and oral defense. Completing an Honors project can be one of the most academically rewarding experiences of a student's undergraduate career.

Each year approximately 25 percent of the graduating class is awarded the Bachelor of Arts or Science degree with Latin Honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) and/or departmental honors. Latin Honors are awarded to graduating seniors who have meet the eligibility requirements: 1.
