Carbonate platform

ABSTRACT Many types of carbonate platforms have been described, from homoclinal ramps to rimmed shelves and a full spectrum of variations in between; the distinction between these different types can be problematic. Nevertheless, classification of carbonate platforms is not just a semantic or academic issue.

Carbonate platform. In contrast, Proterozoic and Phanerozoic carbonate platforms are typically 100s of meters thick and many kilometers in extent. The oldest limestone-dolostone sequences with these dimensions are ~ 2.78-2.94 Ga in age. One of the thickest and best-preserved of these is the ~ 2.8 Ga old limestone at Steep Rock Lake in Northwestern Ontario.

The terms carbonate platform and carbonate shelf are often used synonymously for both modern sediments and ancient rocks formed in this environment:Backstepping of carbonate platform margins is an important process for understanding how carbonate platform responds to paleoenvironment changes. The products of backstepping, such as backstepped margin, backstepping surface and backstepping succession have been widely documented on both modern and ancient platforms around the world. Results from petrographic evidence as well as facies analysis demonstrate that the depositional environment of Jamal Formation in the studied area (Kharu village, East Tabas) exhibits the characteristics of a homoclinal carbonate ramp platform with the gentle slope. Similar carbonate fabrics may result from different pathways of precipitation and diagenetic replacement. Coeval with high carbonate accumulation on the shelves was a proliferation (increase in relative species diversity/richness) of theand uniqueness of the platform come from abun-dant carbonate sedimentation with only <10% terrigenous material, despite its location in the proximity of major rivers. The surficial sediments on the platform comprise various type of carbonate deposits of Late Quaternary age. Rao and Wagle (1997) reviewed the genesis of authigenic, carbon-It can be related to a mid-ramp carbonate platform environment, with depth mainly below and sometimes above the fair-weather wave base (Burchette and Wright, 1992). This interval may represent the carbonate platform recovery and progradation during the sea level high stand, after the rise (Schlager, 2005; Łabaj and Pratt, 2016).The co-evolution of continental arc lengths and carbonate platforms must therefore be considered when considering arc carbon fluxes. Increased volcanic carbon outgassing fluxes are expected when continental arc lengths are longer than at the present-day, as the potential of crustal carbonate intersection is greater ( Lee et al., 2013 , 2015 ...A sedimentary model of carbonate ramp (gently inclined slope) and rimmed platform of Callovian-Oxfordian Stage in Amu Darya Basin (Reference [8,16]). 1 Concept ...8/13/2019 Carbonate Platforms 1/47Carbonate Platforms8/13/2019 Carbonate Platforms 2/47I.
