You can sleep online but the setting is something new and bugged because time skips go against the foundation of a server. They recommend you keep sleeping off for online servers. I've been playing with customisable zombies on my server and we have sprinters mixed in. I would imagine this will all change when build 41 multiplayer goes official. It will vary from server to server, depending on how claims are set to work on each server. There's a claim system that, depending on settings, protects your base area and items. Your player will disappear and probably not require sleep.

Seriously tho, if sleep is turned on in the server everyone on the server has to go asleep at the same time. It's why sleep is turned off most of the time.
