Feed chunks to Frampt and he will give you back 3 large shards apiece. That means the darkwraith base drop rate for large shards is effectively 27% or so, more than 5x as good as the leeches.

There's an enemy in Blighttown to farm, that sometimes drops 5 green titanite shards. Each of those can be broken down into five titanite shards, meaning when you get a 5 green titanite drop, it's equivalent to 25 normal titanite shards dropping.
