Ammonoid fossils

Ammolite is a rare iridescent gemstone made from the fossilized shells of ammonites, a type of extinct marine mollusk. It is one of the three biogenic (organic) gemstones in the world, the other two being amber and pearls. The people of the Blackfoot tribe of Alberta and Montana have known about ammolite for many generations.

Both fossils and molecular phylogenies point towards an origin of vampyropods in the late Permian or Early Triassic, much later than the emergence of the decabrachian lineage. But a recently described fossil has the potential to upend this view of the clade’s origin and the evolution of the cephalopod shell in general.
