As we’ve previously reported, the 2022 NCAA Agreed-Upon Procedures guide was unclear about treatment of Alston awards. We’ve received a lot of questions about treatment of these, so we went to the NCAA directly to get clarity.

The Alston Award was established by Rowland P. Alston, a longtime host of the SCETV, Emmy Award-winning show, “Making It Grow,” in memory of his grandmother, a 1914 Lander graduate. The award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium, recognizes a faculty or staff member who has made an impact on the University and the extended community.Scattered amongst the talk is the Alston case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA's limits to athlete compensation for academic-related costs are in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The rare unanimous decision was delivered on June 21, 2021—just nine days before NIL went into effect.The NCAA permits its member schools to award up to (but no more than) two annual “Senior Scholar Awards” of $10,000 for students to attend graduate school after their athletic eligibility expires.
