AAFA-STL provides children with asthma and allergies life-saving medications, equipment, education, and support. The flagship program, BREATH (formerly Project Concern) fulfills that need. AAFA St. Louis chapter played a key role in passing laws allowing school nurses to keep rescue medications on-hand for children with asthma.

Oral corticosteroids (OCS) are a common treatment for acute asthma flare-ups to reduce inflammation and swelling in the airways. OCS has been shown to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations for asthma. Some people with severe asthma use OCS as a long-term medicine, but OCS can have significant side effects and risks. Here is a short list of allergy medicines: Nasal corticosteroids are nose sprays. They reduce swelling. Swelling causes a stuffy, runny and itchy nose. They are the most effective medicines for nasal allergies. Antihistamines block histamine, a trigger of allergic swelling. They can calm sneezing, itching, runny nose and hives. Six biologics currently are approved by the FDA for moderate-to-severe asthma. Xolair is approved for allergic asthma. Nucala, Fasenra, and Cinqair are approved for eosinophilic asthma. Dupixent may work for type 2 asthma more broadly (allergic and eosinophilic). Tezspire may work for all types of asthma.
